What’s DEI, and why does it seem to be causing divisions in America?

Efforts aimed at promoting diversity, fairness, and inclusivity have been facing opposition in various settings, from corporate boardrooms to legislative chambers and college campuses nationwide.

Since 2023, there have been 81 bills introduced across 28 states and in Congress, targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in colleges. Some of these bills have been signed into law in states like Texas and Florida.

A survey conducted in 2023 by the Pew Research Center revealed that 52% of employed adults in the U.S. have participated in DEI trainings or meetings at work, and 33% report having a designated staff member dedicated to promoting DEI.

However, there’s been a recent trend of some companies scaling back their DEI initiatives, with influential corporate figures like Bill Ackman and Elon Musk criticizing diversity programs on social media.

Critics argue that DEI programs are discriminatory and unfairly prioritize certain groups, particularly White Americans. On the other hand, supporters and experts argue that these programs aim to address historical inequalities and create more inclusive environments.

What exactly is DEI? According to interviews conducted by CNN with DEI experts, diversity involves acknowledging and appreciating the differences individuals bring, whether it’s related to race, age, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, or other aspects of identity. Equity refers to treating everyone fairly and ensuring equal opportunities, while inclusion focuses on respecting everyone’s voice and fostering a culture where people from diverse backgrounds feel valued and encouraged to contribute.

DEI initiatives have roots tracing back to the civil rights movement of the 1960s, which prompted efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in workplaces. However, there have been periods of pushback, such as during the 1980s when corporate deregulation policies shifted focus away from diversity efforts.

The murder of George Floyd in 2020 reignited discussions around racial justice and led to a renewed emphasis on DEI in many organizations. Despite recent challenges and controversies surrounding DEI programs, many companies remain committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

In higher education, DEI has become a contentious issue, with some states taking steps to limit or eliminate DEI programs in public schools and universities. Critics argue that these programs are divisive and distract from other issues, while supporters maintain that DEI is essential for preparing students for a diverse world.

The debate over DEI is likely to continue, with ongoing legislative efforts and differing perspectives shaping the future of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in various institutions and organizations.
