Nikki Haley’s journey seems to be coming to an end. She used to be the governor of South Carolina and the US ambassador to the United Nations. Lately, she was the main person from the Republican party running against ex-President Donald Trump in the 2024 primary. Unfortunately, she lost in her home state, showing that Trump is the preferred choice for Republicans.

Even though Haley said she wouldn’t give up if South Carolina picked Trump, things don’t look good for her. She’s still getting a lot of money and putting up ads in states that will vote soon. But she hasn’t won anywhere, not even in Nevada where she lost by a lot. Trump didn’t even take part in that contest, but he still won Nevada’s caucuses that give delegates.

People usually think about giving a chance to someone who came close before, like Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, John McCain, and Mitt Romney. But Trump’s legal situation is unusual, and Republicans might need a backup plan.

If Haley keeps fighting with Trump, it might not help her chances in 2028 or later this year. Some Republicans want the primary to continue, but Haley isn’t winning anywhere, and that’s usually why primaries go on for a long time. Even Howard Dean in 2004, who famously screamed after winning his home state, had victories.

If Haley continues, she might lose by more significant amounts as the race goes to different states. She could also be blamed for not letting the party unite around Trump while Democrats support President Joe Biden without any big competition.

This year, it’s been hard for Republicans to go against Trump without seeming against the party’s supporters. Now, that’s where Haley is. If she wants to help Trump in November or have a comeback later, she should listen to her home state’s voters and stop trying.
