On Wednesday, Bayern Munich shared that Thomas Tuchel will step down as head coach by the end of the season. Tuchel, who started coaching the team in March 2023, is leaving earlier than planned, finishing a year before his contract was supposed to end in June 2025.

This decision comes after Bayern faced a series of disappointing results, falling eight points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. Additionally, they suffered a 1-0 loss to Lazio in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 match.

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen mentioned in a statement that, after a good and open discussion, they mutually agreed to end their working relationship in the summer.

“We’re looking to take a different approach in football with a new head coach for the 2024/25 season. Until then, everyone in the club needs to give their best in the Champions League and Bundesliga,” Dreesen said.

“I’m holding the team accountable, especially in the Champions League. Despite losing 1-0 to Lazio in the first leg, we believe we can make it to the quarter-finals at the Allianz Arena with our fans cheering us on.”

Tuchel added, “We’ve decided to part ways at the end of this season. Until then, I’ll keep working hard with my coaching staff for the best results.”

Tuchel, who has previously coached top European teams like Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Borussia Dortmund, took over from Julian Nagelsmann as Bayern head coach last year and won the Bundesliga in his first season.

After dramatically winning the German title, Tuchel’s Bayern team got a boost by getting Harry Kane in the summer, signing from Tottenham Hotspur for a reported $126 million.

In February, Bayern got convincingly beaten 3-0 by title rival Leverkusen, making people worry about the team’s direction. They also faced defeats in the Champions League against Lazio and against mid-table VFL Bochum on Sunday, which is unusual for Bayern.

Tuchel leaving at the end of the season is amidst rumors that Bayern might be interested in Xabi Alonso, the highly-rated coach of Leverkusen. Alonso, 42, is considered one of Europe’s top coaches for transforming Leverkusen’s style of play and improving their performance.

Reports suggest Bayern and Alonso’s former club, Liverpool, are interested in hiring him. Liverpool might need a replacement for their long-time manager J├╝rgen Klopp, who’s leaving at the end of the season.
