The big election in North Carolina is shaping up to be a close and intense race. The Democrats have picked Josh Stein, a moderate and straightforward state Attorney General, to go head-to-head with Mark Robinson, the Republican nominee and current lieutenant governor known for his strong right-wing views.

They’re competing to take over from Gov. Roy Cooper, who can’t run again due to term limits. Democrats want to keep their influence in Southern politics, and there’s a chance the state might flip in the upcoming presidential election.

In the past, Donald Trump won North Carolina, but Joe Biden almost pulled off a surprise victory. Now, the Republicans might face a backlash in November because of their party-line vote against Cooper’s veto of a 12-week abortion ban.

Even though the Republicans control the state legislature, they haven’t held the governor’s office since Cooper’s election in 2016. Robinson, a favorite among MAGA supporters, shares a similar political style with Trump. He’s vocal about gun rights and abortion bans and has been involved in controversial rhetoric against certain groups.

Despite criticism for his remarks on social issues, Robinson refuses to step down. He has downplayed the atrocities of Nazi Germany and argued against socialism.

On the other side, Stein has strong political ties in the state, with his father being a renowned civil rights attorney. The Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade, allowing North Carolina Republicans to pass the abortion ban, is expected to be a major issue in the election. Robinson supports even stricter measures, while Stein warns of the potential consequences if the GOP gains unchecked power.

Reproductive freedom is a key point of contention, with Stein emphasizing the importance of women’s rights. Trump has officially endorsed Robinson, noting their political similarities. The election is expected to be closely contested, with both the presidential and gubernatorial races hanging in the balance.
