Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, visited Uvalde, Texas, and met with the family of Irma Garcia, a much-loved teacher who died in a tragic school shooting. Garcia had been teaching for a long time when she, along with 20 others, tragically lost their lives in the shooting. Just two days later, her husband also passed away from a heart attack.

John Martinez, Irma Garcia’s nephew, shared with CNN that Harry and Meghan have stayed in touch with his family since the terrible event. Meghan also attended and spoke at the South by Southwest festival in Austin before stopping in Uvalde to visit the family.

Martinez described the royal couple as kind, compassionate, and down-to-earth people. He shared how Meghan had called his mom one day out of the blue to announce their visit, which brought great excitement to the family.

Before leaving, Meghan surprised Martinez’s mom with a birthday cake. Video footage captured the heartfelt moment of them singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Claudia Martinez, Irma’s sister.

Meghan had previously visited Uvalde to pay her respects at a memorial for the victims of the shooting. A spokesperson for the Duchess mentioned that Meghan went there as a mother herself, to offer her condolences and support to a community in deep sorrow.

The royal visit occurred shortly after an independent investigation into the local police response to the shooting was presented. The report, delivered by retired detective Jesse Prado, cleared local officers of wrongdoing, sparking anger among victims’ families who demanded accountability for the failures in the law enforcement response.
