Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, visited Uvalde, Texas, to meet with the family of Irma Garcia, a much-loved teacher who tragically died in a school shooting.

Garcia, who had been teaching for 23 years, was one of the victims of the shooting in May 2022, where 21 people, including two teachers and 19 children, lost their lives. Two days after Garcia’s death, her husband Joe Garcia passed away from a heart attack.

Irma Garcia’s nephew, John Martinez, shared that Harry and Meghan had been in touch with their family since the tragedy. Meghan had attended and spoken at the South by Southwest festival in Austin the day before they visited Uvalde.

Martinez expressed how nice and caring Harry and Meghan were, mentioning that Meghan had surprised his mom with a birthday cake before they left. They sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Claudia Martinez, Irma’s sister. This wasn’t their first meeting with the family, according to Claudia Martinez.

Meghan had previously visited Uvalde shortly after the shooting, where she was seen placing flowers at a memorial outside the courthouse. A spokesperson for Meghan said she went there as a mother to personally offer her condolences and support to the grieving community.

The royal visit happened just after an independent investigator released a report at a city council meeting, which cleared local officers of any wrongdoing in their response to the shooting. This sparked anger among many victims’ families who demanded accountability.

During the meeting, Veronica Mata, whose daughter was killed in the shooting, expressed frustration at the investigator’s findings, questioning whether the officers acted in “good faith” given the delays in their response despite knowing children were still inside.
