A 12-year-old boy from Palestine was fatally shot by an officer near Shuafat refugee camp in eastern Jerusalem. Hospital officials and an Israeli police spokesperson confirmed this.

In a video obtained by CNN, the boy named Rami Al Halhouli is seen holding a lit firework. Suddenly, a gunshot is heard, and the boy falls down just as the firework shoots into the sky.

The Israeli police spokesperson stated that the shooting occurred during a “violent disturbance” in the camp. The officer fired at a suspect who was firing aerial fireworks towards them, endangering their safety.

This incident happened during the holy month of Ramadan, which often sees tensions rise between Israelis and Palestinians.

According to the police, Molotov cocktails and fireworks were thrown at security forces on Tuesday night. However, no security forces are seen in the video of the incident involving Al Halhouli.

In another video taken after the shooting, people gather around the boy as he lies on the ground, while a woman screams his name.

The Israeli police mentioned that this was the second consecutive night of disturbances in Shuafat, with Molotov cocktails and fireworks aimed at them.

Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir praised the soldier who shot the boy, calling him a terrorist. He commended the soldier’s actions, stating that this is how one should deal with terrorists—firmly and precisely.
