A group of lawmakers in Georgia is looking into the actions of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. They will listen to Ashleigh Merchant, a lawyer defending Mike Roman, who accused the DA of having an inappropriate connection with special prosecutor Nathan Wade.

Ashleigh Merchant is the first person to speak in front of the committee, which consists of six Republicans and three Democrats. The committee aims to find out if Willis had a conflict of interest or misused public money in her relationship with the special prosecutor. They claim that their romantic involvement began in 2021, the year Willis hired him.

The committee is also asking for important documents used by Merchant as evidence. These documents were part of her efforts to remove Willis from leading the 2020 Georgia election interference case against Donald Trump and his co-defendants.

Even though the committee can suggest changes to Georgia laws, it doesn’t have the authority to directly punish Willis. During the first hearing, Sen. Bill Cowsert, the Republican Committee Chairman, mentioned hearing from “whistleblowers” in the District Attorney’s office but didn’t provide details. The committee plans to investigate any credible allegations, and they are willing to take the time needed, including issuing subpoenas for more witnesses.
