Last night, a small plane crashed and caught fire on Nashville’s Interstate 40. Unfortunately, everyone on board lost their lives. The pilot had permission to make an emergency landing at John C. Tune Airport due to engine problems around 7:40 p.m. However, they couldn’t reach the runway and crashed instead.

The exact number of people on the plane is still unknown, but the impact caused a deadly explosion. Witnesses saw the plane in distress before it crashed behind a Costco near I-40 East. Fortunately, no buildings were hit.

Emergency crews are working to identify the victims and determine where the plane came from. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash’s cause. The incident led to the closure of I-40 East at mile marker 202, causing traffic delays.

One eastbound lane will reopen later tonight, and two lanes should be open before Tuesday morning’s rush hour. However, commuters should still expect slow traffic and delays early Tuesday. Videos and images shared by witnesses and police show the plane engulfed in flames and emergency responders at the crash site.

“If you’re driving tonight, it’s best to take a different way,” Hammonds suggested, mentioning that the investigation will continue.

CNN has asked the Federal Aviation Administration for more details.
